The city said in a news release that smoke is lingering in Marion, Boone, Hendricks and Hamilton counties. These are issued when particulate or ozone matter in the air rises above certain levels, becoming unhealthy for sensitive people. The city declared a Knozone Action Day on Thursday. The Indiana Department of Environmental Management and the Environmental Protection Agency also arrived Wednesday to assist in testing for hazardous materials and air quality issues from the fire. Anderson said the investigation into the fire's cause and origin could take days, even weeks. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is investigating the fire. Relief groups with canopies were set up in a parking lot across the street, with pallets of water and snacks for the firefighters. Firefighters on ladders continued to dump water on the smoldering building.Ĭharred Walmart trucks stuck out, and a wall and partial-roof collapse could be seen on the building's south side. The fire continued to burn into Thursday evening, with a strong smell and white haze of dust and smoke in the air near the facility. “It’s gonna take quite a bit of manpower and work to remove some of the obstacles in our way,” Anderson said. He estimated the earliest that could happen is Friday. The units then shifted their focus exclusively on extinguishing the flames outside, Anderson said, and clearing paths for investigators to safely gain access into the building. The fire was mostly contained in the roughly 1.2-million-square-foot facility by the next morning, Anderson said. Anderson said two dozen fire departments responded to assist Plainfield Fire Territory in putting out the fire. Fire crews rotated every four hours to tamp down the hot spots inside. “When you’re watching, all these things are running through your head,” she said. She recalled watching in disbelief as flames engulfed her place of employment for the past 4 ½ years.
